Marker Lights: Essential for Vehicle Visibility and Safety

What are Marker Lights and Why Are They Important?

Marker lights (also known as marker lamps) play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility of your HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) or LGV (Light Goods Vehicle) on the road. These lights are essential for ensuring that your vehicle remains visible to other drivers, particularly during nighttime driving or in poorly lit areas where streetlights are sparse. Even though many drivers may not fully understand their significance, marker lights are key to notifying other road users of your vehicle’s presence, keeping both you and others on the road safe.

How to Properly Check Your Marker Lights

It’s essential to ensure your marker lights are functioning correctly before setting off on any journey. The UK government recommends daily walkaround checks for HGV drivers, including inspecting each part of the vehicle. Here’s how to check your marker lights:

  1. Check for Proper Functionality:
Start by leaving the engine running. The marker lights should automatically light up. If any of the LEDs are not working, the light is non-compliant with UK regulations and must be repaired.
  2. Inspect the Lenses:
Ensure that the marker light lenses are clean and securely fitted. If any lenses are loose or obstructed by dirt, repair or clean them immediately. Failure to maintain visible marker lights can result in hefty fines during inspections. You can check here for replacement.

Legal Requirements for Marker Lights

The UK government has outlined specific rules for the position and color of marker lights. All HGV drivers must follow these regulations to remain compliant:

  • Amber Side Marker Lights:

Trailers and new goods vehicles over 6 meters long must be equipped with amber-colored side marker lights along the side of the vehicle body. There should be a gap of 3 meters between each marker light, with at least 3 lights on each side. If necessary, a gap of 4 meters is also acceptable.

  • Red Marker Lights for the Rear:

Marker lights near the rear of the vehicle or trailer must be red. The rear-end outline marker light may also function as the rear-most side marker light, as long as it meets the required specifications.

  • End-Outline Marker Lights for Larger Trailers:

Trailers over 2.1 meters must have end-outline marker lights, with the front being white and the rear being red. These lights should be positioned as high as possible to improve visibility for drivers coming from either direction.

  • Position Lamps Cannot Replace Marker Lights:

It’s important to note that position lamps should never replace marker lights. A separate marker light must be fitted in compliance with legal standards.
